The project is about looking at the intentions and motives of the rural population for staying or leaving rural areas. The goals of the project are a deeper understanding of the reasons for their choice to stay, determining the spatial characteristics of such locations, highlighting their advantages for life and apostrophizing the main challenges faced by the rural population. The idea is to document affirmative rural stories that will contribute to a positive perception of life in the countryside.

The research will be carried out on the territory of the region of Šumadija and Western Serbia in cooperation with the Geographical Institute “Jovan Cvijić” SANU with partners: Women’s Association “Sačuvajmo selo” (Priboj), Rural Tourism of Serbia (Ljig), Club Ars nova (Valjevo), Mountaineering Club ” Tara” (Bajina Bašta), the Center for the Promotion of Tourism Economy TERRA (Užice) and the Culture Center “Vuk Karadžić” (Loznica). In the project, citizens will be actively involved in all phases of scientific research in various ways.

The benefits of project implementation will be visible through: strengthening and sustainability of rural communities, targeting challenges in order to encourage the development of rural areas, promoting a positive image of the countryside in order to mitigate the existing negative processes that characterize them. Also, the project will contribute to the enrichment of the scientific work in the field of rural studies and migration studies in Serbia.
