Mountaineering club Tara
Founding
The Mountaineering Association “TARA” was founded on 22nd January 2012 with the primary objective of inspiring the local population to start practicing mountain climbing and similar activities, primarily in the Tara mountain, but also across Serbia and the region … We became a member of the Mountaineering Association of Serbia the same year, and since 2013, we are members of the Sports Association of Bajina Bašta.
Beggining
In the years preceding the club foundation, a need occurred for gathering individuals who used to practice mountaineering in a single organisation, and investing joint work on ensuring affirmation of mountaineering by organising mountaineering activities, organised mountain clmbing, hiking and canyoning and by maintaining the existing and creating new attractive mountain trails.
The club started organising mountaineering and hiking tours in April 2012, and over the last years, it has successfully implemented hundreds of those. We have left thousands of kilometers, conquered peaks and canyons behind us, and most importantly, the unforgettable moments of socialisation. Hundreds of Bajina Bašta residents took part in various club activities, and alongside, everyone has contributed to spreading the beautiful story about sport, nature and friendship in their own ways.
Humanitarian actions
We take care of others
Aside from its regular activities, the Club also took part in numerous charity and environmental actions. Beside the regular charity actions we conduct in cooperation with the Red Cross, we should mention that a large number of our members has been involved in action of support for our population during the floods in 2014, both in the territory of our municipality, and in the flooded Obrenovac.
The club members took part in numerous rescue actions in the inaccessible terrains of the Tara Mountain. We found the lost tourists, rescued people and animals, but we were also there in the most difficult situations, when we were needed to pull out a dead person’s body. In such situations, we helped our friends from the fire-fighting and rescuing unit and the Voluntary Fire-Fighting Society both with respect to the personnel, and technical and mountaineering equipment, without which it would practically be impossible to reach the afflicted or dead person.
Ever since 2015, when we successfully organised a central annual mountaineering event in Serbia in Rastište – The Mountaineers’ Days, we have been working on adapting the old primary school’s facility into a mountain hut. The construction works on the facility are performed in stages, according to the financial capacities, and grants awarded. Rastiste mountain hut became fully operative in 2022, as highest categorized mountain facility, providing hostel based accommodation services.
Working closely with Tara National Park
Exceptional cooperation with the PE National Park Tara was achieved in 2015, at the very beginning of the trailing and trail marking project realisation. Owing to a successful project realisation, a network of over 290km of beautiful trails leading all the way to Tara peaks, viewpoints and other known locations was established. What followed was the development of a tourist and mountaineering map which has comprehensively presented the newly made network. Cooperation with the National Park Tara continued through participation in projects with the WWF, through the INTERREG project, Eko Karst and participation of MA Tara members in the Council of National Park Tara service users.

Meet Us
We continue along the trampled path
Since 2016 until 2019, we managed to successfully realise six projects supported by the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia. Since 2019. Mountain Association Tara became highly active in development and realization of EU funded Erasmus+ Sport and Youth projects. Project objectives are of different kinds: social inclusion, mobility, gender equality, environmental engagement and education… Besides that we are partners of Mountain Rescue Service of Serbia, Sarajevo and Brcko in Cross-border project IePCR and many other smaller projects and partnerships.
Currently, the club is composed of 120 active members, 5 licensed mountaineering and pedestrian guides, 4 licensed “Leave no Trace” coaches and more than 30 competitors in sky running and trekking league. Our club members includes professors, doctors of medicine, teachers, economists, entrepreneurs, students, pupils, etc.
